This program is designed to prepare students for industry-recognized medical billing and coding certification examinations, including the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), and the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
Medical billing and coding is generally not a state-licensed profession. New Mexico does not currently require state licensure for employment as a medical biller or medical coder. Employers may require certification, education, training, background checks, or other qualifications as conditions of employment.
Students intending to work outside New Mexico should contact the appropriate state regulatory agency or employer to determine whether any additional requirements apply in their state or place of employment.
