Course Overview

In this online medical assistant training program, you will learn a broad range of skills that make medical assistants versatile and valuable, including medical terminology, medical law and ethics, HIPAA rules, and scheduling systems. You will also learn how to perform duties of a medical assistant, such as measuring vital signs, assisting with exams, performing laboratory testing, maintaining equipment and supplies, administering injections, obtaining blood specimens, scheduling appointments, registering patients, and more.

The medical terminology course curriculum introduces key concepts of medical language and human anatomy, emphasizing the interconnectedness of body systems in health and disease. You will cover topics such as musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and immune systems. The online medical assistant certification course also includes the opportunity to become CPR certified and participate in an unpaid clinical experience.

What You'll Learn

  • You will learn the necessary skills and various administrative and clinical job duties of a medical assistant
  • Understand ethical behavior, therapeutic communication, HIPAA Privacy Rules, maintaining a safe office environment, medical terminology, and clinical procedures.
  • Demonstrate basic medical terminology knowledge and identify the functions of the major body systems
  • Obtain a patient history and explain the information contained in different types of medical records.

This Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) program is designed to prepare students for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification exam.

New Mexico does not currently require state licensure for medical assistants. However, employers may require certification, education, training, background checks, or other qualifications as conditions of employment. For more information about healthcare profession regulation in New Mexico, please visit the New Mexico Medical Board.

Students intending to work outside New Mexico should contact the appropriate state regulatory agency or licensing authority to determine whether this program meets educational requirements and whether additional requirements may apply.

Students intending to work in Washington state may be required to provide or request an official transcript from the institution where they completed their training to qualify for employment as a Medical Assistant-Certified. This Certified Clinical Medical Assistant course does not meet state requirements for students intending to work in South Carolina, effective July 15, 2026. For more information, please visit the South Carolina H. 5183 Medical Assistant Requirements.

Certification exams offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) are available only to candidates testing within the United States.
