Course Overview

What makes a photograph “good”—and why do different viewers often experience the same image in completely different ways? This six-week, discussion-based course explores how photographs create meaning through a dynamic interaction between image and viewer. Moving beyond technical instruction, the class focuses on how visual structure, personal experience, context, and imagination all shape the way photographs are seen and understood. Through guided viewing, group dialogue, and close analysis of a wide range of images, students will learn to look more carefully, think more critically, and articulate their responses with clarity and confidence. Topics include visual composition and design, the emotional and psychological response to images, the role of memory and personal experience, the influence of context and narrative, and the ways different genres and styles shape interpretation. Designed for photographers of all levels—from hobbyists to experienced practitioners—this course emphasizes thoughtful engagement over technical skill, offering a deeper understanding of how photographs communicate, resonate, and endure.
