Course Overview

The Cautivo System (captive system) was the evolution of a unique casta or ethnic group in the early Spanish New Mexico Province.  We will explore the origins of the Genízaros through primary sources, historiography, and genetic analysis. Their origins start in the late 17th century and early 18th century. We will also examine their roots as a military group and a legacy defined by 21st century political identity.
