Course Overview

Of all Plato's dialogues, the Symposium is perhaps the most ethereal in terms of its subject matter, which is Love, and its emergence into Beauty. It is an account of a dinner party attended by Socrates and several of his friends. It is held in honor of the poet/playwright, Agathon's, winning of an award for a tragedy that he wrote. It is agreed upon by all attending that instead of drinking this night they will go round the table and everyone will give a speech on Love. What ensues is a gradual emergence of what has been called "Plato's Ladder of Love." This course will consist of four classes in which the various speeches will be examined.
