Course Overview

The 1680 Massacre of San Lorenzo is significant not only in New Mexican history, but it was also the most successful Native-American Uprising in North America against European rule prior to the eighteenth century Wars of Independence. The Uprising raised profound questions about the viability of Spanish settlement in the Tierra Adentro. The Uprising’s legacy is complex and contradictory including the question, “Since the Spanish authorities never actually saw the leader Popay, did he really exist or was he the clever product of the Pueblo counter-intelligence to hide the actual identities of the insurgent leaders?” We will also examine how the Spanish return to New Mexico after the Massacre of San Lorenzo affected the creation of the Genizaro.
