Course Overview

Explore Latin America through the deep history of its people, cultures and environments. We'll examine the development of societies in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and South America, while considering where New Mexico fits within this broader cultural landscape. The final session centers on an engaging, student-driven discussion exploring the dynamic relationship between geography and human culture in shaping historical outcomes. Participants will consider themes such as environmental influence, Indigenous lifeways, agriculture, political systems and economic development. Students will emerge with a richer understanding of Latin America’s complexities and a deeper appreciation for the forces that shape societies over time.
