Course Overview

The French poet and troubadour Chrétien de Troyes produced the first Grail story in 1182, followed by Robert de Boron of France and Wolfram von Eschenbach of Germany. The Cathars were a heretical Christian dualist movement that thrived in some areas of Southern Europe, particularly northern Italy and southern France, between the 12th and 14th centuries. The Catholic Church denounced their practices and sent a crusade to destroy them. The Inquisition was established in 1234 to uproot the remaining Cathars. We will explore the history and the connections they have to one another.
