Course Overview

Murals are a universal language; they make a connection as a cultural gallery that illustrates how a community develops. Murals bring awareness to community about diversity and how we live simultaneously, sharing multiple cultures.

This studio arts course introduces and involves students in painting a large-scale collaborative community mural project. Participants will study local murals/muralists and their contribution to beautifying public spaces. We'll work collaboratively to generate ideas, plan preliminary mural sketches, design compositions, research cultural symbolism, scale images and paint a large-scale collaborative community painting.
Students will participate in a Mural Design Workshop and after completion will be eligible to paint a 6'x30' mural on location at UNM Continuing Education.

Participants in this class will have the opportunity to contribute to beautifying the Continuing Education campus -- creating a physical work that they will be able to visit and look back on. They will learn the basic fundamentals of creating a mural, while also discussing the social/local implications of making work that is for the general public.

We will discuss local and personal histories, creating a collaborative series of images that can be a document of our time together, and this specific moment in history.
