19689 - Who Are the Poet Laureates?

Course Overview

This course will examine the history of the Poet Laureate system and the purpose of the program. Then we'll take a look at some of the best of the best of the poets who have been honored over the years. From Joseph Auslander, the very first American Poet Laureate (1937-41) to Robert Frost, Maxine Kumin, Billy Collins, Louise Gluck, Donald Hall, our own Joy Harjo and others. We'll enjoy their poetry and see if we can agree on what makes them special.
