Course Overview

Get the tools to further develop your works of fiction!

Good writing is a skill and may be taught. We’ll practice various forms of intermediate fiction writing while learning about plot and character development, writing structure and the importance of setting. This class will provide the tools for you to develop your longer works of fiction. We'll focus on fiction writing as a structural process by taking note from the seven story structures. What are the core elements of successful creative writing and how do you find your story and your voice?

There are no genre or writing style requirements for the course. Writers in all disciplines will have the opportunity to discuss their work focusing on structure and process rather than genre conventions.

The creative license is yours. Participation and willingness to write is required as is ability to give and receive respectful feedback.

What You'll Learn

  • Gain advanced knowledge of the core elements of successful fiction writing: character writing, setting writing, and, most of all, plot development
  • Learn seven different forms of fiction writing with an emphasis on the structure of writing and plot development. Most importantly your will learn how these structures work best for your in your creative process
  • You will practice the seven story structures: Plot Arc, Freytag’s Triangle, The Hero’s Journey, Fichtean Curve, In Medias Res, Seven Point Story Structure, and Save the Cat
  • Walk away from the course with a developed longer work of fiction, either a collection of stories or a novel-length draft, depending on your own creative license
  • Learn advanced elements of fiction writing and the exploration of form necessary to propel your own creative writing process and complete your writing projects.

Who Should Attend

This class is appropriate for intermediate level writers or past participants in Seven Story Structures (course #14779).
