Course Overview

Emperor Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire was known as Stupor Mundi, the wonder of the world, because he was both learned and a successful military leader. During his reign, he not only ruled over the kingdom of Germany, northern Italy, and the kingdom of Sicily, but he also gained access to Jerusalem for Christian pilgrims for the first time since its capture by Muslim forces in 1187 CE. But his reign was complicated by conflict with the German nobility and multiple popes. In this class, we’ll examine Frederick II’s rise to power and the struggles he faced.
