Course Overview

The Federal Reserve is the non-elected body that most impacts Americans’ economic lives. It has a dual, and often conflicting, mandate to stop inflation and limit unemployment, by regulating the money supply. Since its 1913 creation, it has usually functioned independently, although some Presidents, including President Trump, have tried to influence it. How do interest rates work and why is inflation a problem? How does the Fed operate? How has it regulated banks and stabilized the economy as America’s central bank? How do bonds and stocks (the financial markets) react after the Fed’s meetings and decisions?
