39138 - Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling Children and Adolescents
Course Overview
A growing number of children and adolescents are struggling with mental health issues. Counselors who work with minors must balance the legal rights of parents and guardians with their primary ethical obligation to the child. They know and practice within their boundary of competence and are aware of issues related to informed consent and assent, privacy and confidentiality, and technology along with federal and state statues that apply to counseling minor children and adolescents. NAADAC Approved for 4 professional training hours (CEUs). NM Counseling and Therapy Practice Board recognizes NAADAC CEUs.

• Identify state and federal legal statutes that apply to counseling minors.• Discuss how personal values and beliefs influence working with minors.
• Recognize ethical practices and challenges pertaining to confidentiality and privacy with minors.
• Distinguish ethical/legal standards and guidelines for counseling minor children and adolescent clients across school and clinical settings.
• Know and practice using an ethical decision-making process that integrates ethical and legal considerations.
Who Should Attend
- Student working towards becoming a licensed counselor in LSAA or LADAC
- Current counselors, those in the behavioral health field in need of continuing education hours for their license renewal.
Requirements
Student will need to attend all course sessions and pass final exam or assignment with a 70% or above to receive course completion certificate.Accrediting Associations
