Course Overview

Obtain the knowledge and industry-recognized credentials to stand out in the fast-growing healthcare industry. We have partnered with AAPC to help you get certified as a Medical Coder through this self-paced course. The Medical Certified Professional Coding (CPC) course teaches fundamental medical coding skills for professional services (physicians, mid-level providers, etc.) and prepares you to take AAPC's CPC exam. The course includes: Fundamentals of Medicine covering: medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology and applying it to reading medical records and coding. Next, you will learn CPT®, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding with hands-on practice, coding real-world redacted medical records. Assuring a broad knowledge in reviewing and assigning the correct procedure and diagnosis codes for professional (physician) services. This self-paced course is 80 hours with 10-month access.

What You'll Learn

  • Identify how to use medical terminology to read a medical record.
  • Use anatomic reference systems to identify anatomic positions and landmarks.
  • Understand an overview of the pathophysiology of common conditions.
  • Identify the purpose of the CPT®, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II code books

  • Apply coding conventions when assigning diagnoses and procedure codes
  • Identify the information in appendices of the CPT® code book

  • Code a wide variety of patient services using CPT®, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II codes
  • List the major features of HCPCS Level II codes
  • Provide practical application of coding operative reports and evaluation and management services

Additional Information

Participant has to complete all assignments and obtain a 70% or above on all chapter exams, the final exam, and the course score overall to obtain a certificate of completion.  Note on course hours: 80 clock hours accounts only for time spent in the online course, and does not include time spent outside the course or study time. Study time will vary widely per individual.

This course prepares one to become nationally certified as a CPC, Certified Professional Coder with AAPC. It includes the exam for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Certification. For questions about the exam and national certification, please contact AAPC

The medical coding industry does not require a license, instead the industry relies on voluntary, national certifications. This course prepares students for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) certification examination offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

The medical coding profession does not require state licensure in New Mexico. Instead, the industry relies on voluntary national certifications, such as the CPC credential offered by AAPC. Employers may require professional certification as a condition of employment.

Students residing outside New Mexico should contact their employer, state regulatory agency, or AAPC to determine whether additional requirements apply in their state or workplace.
