Course Overview

In the Certified Professional Billing (CPB) course students will develop skills related to maintaining all aspects of the revenue cycle, particularly patient and payer billing and collections. Without expertise in medical billing and the nuances of payer requirements, healthcare provider reimbursement may be compromised. Through rigorous examination and experience, CPBs have proven knowledge of how to submit claims compliant with government regulations and private payer policies. They follow up on claim statuses, resolve claim denials, submit appeals, post payments and adjustments, and manage collections. The CPB medical billing credential is vital to the financial success of the professional healthcare services claims process. Self-paced course is 80 hours with 10-month access.

What You'll Learn

• Identify how to use medical terminology to read a medical record.
• Use anatomic reference systems to identify anatomic positions and landmarks.
• Understand an overview of the pathophysiology of common conditions.
• Review an introduction to healthcare from a medical billing perspective.

• Understand the legal regulatory considerations involved in health care reimbursement and collections.
• Explain the process of a physician-based insurance claim including obtaining patient data, claim form completion, insurance carrier processing and payment received
• Demonstrate the ability to use the three major coding manuals, CPT®, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II, and apply medical necessity standards.
• Explain the follow up process for A/R in a physician’s office, including the top denials by insurance carrier along with their appeals process.

Additional Information

Participant must attempt all required quizzes and practical application assignments and receive a passing score of 70% or above on all chapter review exams, on final exam, and on the overall course score to receive a certificate of completion.  Note on course hours: 80 clock hours accounts only for time spent in the online course, and does not include time spent outside the course or study time. Study time will vary widely per individual.

This course prepares one to be nationally certified as a CPB, Certified Professional Biller with AAPC. This course includes the the exam for the Certified Professional Biller (CPB) Certification. For questions about the exam and national certification, please contact AAPC.

The medical billing industry does not require a license, instead the industry relies on voluntary, national certifications. Employers may require a national professional certification to ensure compliance. If you are outside of New Mexico, please contact your employer or AAPC for requirements in your specific state.
