Course Overview

Leonard Bernstein, the charismatic conductor-composer, supported liberal causes from the New Deal onward. Blacklisted during McCarthyism, investigated by the FBI, and on Nixon’s “enemies” list, he paid a personal and professional price. Yet, he remained a passionate musician, enriching millions worldwide. This course explores Bernstein’s life, political beliefs, and extraordinary talents as a conductor, pianist, educator, and composer. Through active participation, students will engage with his remarkable legacy and the challenges he faced while staying true to his convictions.
