Course Overview

Mythology and literature often portray certain goddesses and women as monstrous figures. However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that these women were not truly monsters. Instead, they were revered as sacred and powerful figures in matrilineal societies. When patriarchal cultures began to conquer these matrilineal societies, they stripped these women and goddesses of their roles, purposes, and power, casting them as malicious, unnatural "monsters" in the process. In this exploration, we will look at various goddesses and women from different cultures to understand their original significance and how they were transformed into monstrous figures.
