Course Overview

We’ll explore the 1957-58 Asian Influenza pandemic, caused by the H2N2 virus. The pandemic killed about 1.1 million people worldwide, including 116,000 in the United States. During the early stages of the outbreak, the US Surgeon General and other health officials appeared on TV to discuss the virus’s origins, symptoms, severity, treatment, and predictions for the pandemic. We’ll compare the 1957-58 pandemic to the COVID-19 pandemic and examine the lessons learned, focusing on how those insights might have changed the response and outcomes of the more recent crisis. Join us to explore these crucial historical parallels.
