Course Overview

The Classical era in Greece is rightfully regarded as a particularly formative era in early western history.  While many Greek city-states had abandoned monarchy for oligarchic forms of government by the beginning of the Classical era, the Athenians were transforming their political system from an oligarchy to a democracy.  This transformation involved some internal strife and was also criticized by other city-states, whose leaders viewed democracy as no better than the rule of the mob.  In this lecture, we’ll discuss the political evolution of Classical Athens and how it fared in the face of threats from its oligarchic neighbors.
