Course Overview

From 1888 to 1889, the Dutch-origin artist Van Gogh lived in Provence, France, partly in the company of his contemporary artist and friend Paul Gauguin. Why were these months spent in Provence the most significant of Van Gogh's career? One of the most enigmatic artists of all time, Van Gogh incorporated the colors, textures, and landscapes of Provence into his work in inventive ways, shattering artistic commonplaces and breaking new ground. What was his relationship with Gauguin, and how did the two, despite their differences, form a powerful (albeit temporary) artistic duo?  Join Professor Cathy Yandell in exploring the importance of Van Gogh's trajectory in Provence.
