Course Overview

The average person speaks about 16,000 words per day. Whether spoken in anger, jest, love, or just boredom, these words drop from our mouths without any sense of the history behind them. Any elementary teacher “worth her salt” would not tell a group of boys where the word pencils come from. Why is she “worth her salt”? At a lunch of sandwiches, cookies and punch, those boys cross oceans. What’s the connection between a sandwich and an English gambler? Pop a cookie in your mouth and you’re in Amsterdam. Swallow that punch and you’re in India consuming a drink of five ingredients. If there is a bottle of ketchup on the table, you’ll squirt your friend with an ancient Chinese sauce. Build your “bank” of word histories which - unlike money - do not lead to “bankruptcy.” Join us for a class that lets the “skeletons out of the closet” when we speak.
