Course Overview

Abstraction is a way of working that allows infinite freedom creatively in addition to being the purest vehicle for human expression and communication. We will examine and discuss the art movements and artists from the end of the 1800’s and beginning of the 20th Century in Europe up into the present day. This class will provide an overview of Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism and many other “isms” and schools will be covered as well as some of the non-European influences from Asia, Africa and Indigenous America. A lot of material will be covered and our goal is to condense a complicated historical trajectory into a digestible and comprehensible chain of events.
