Course Overview

Join us to paint the southwestern landscape en plein air. We will explore painting and drawing fundamentals in watercolor at various sites in the Sandia Mountains. Topics include color mixing, composition, technique, and style. You will become familiar and confident with watercolor and find joy in painting outside.

Watercolor Materials List

Watercolor materials:

9x12” Watercolor paper pad or sketchbook

Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Ultramarine Blue watercolor pencils

Portable tray of watercolors, like Windsor-Newton

Round watercolor brushes, size 10 and size 2

Mottler brush size 1, or other flat brush

2 small plastic jars for water

Paper towels

1” masking tape

Sketchbook and pencil

Pocket Color Wheel

Supplies for painting outside:

Something to sit on or stand at while painting (a folding chair, an easel, etc.) I prefer to stand, but it’s up to you!

Sun protection (sun hat, sun screen, long sleeves, pants, closed toed shoes)

Drinking water & snacks
