Course Overview

In the mid-19th century, numerous Indian nations stood in the way of westward expansion and led the federal government to establish a system of reservations under a “Peace Policy” phase. We will look at the circumstances that resulted in the decision, reservation administration by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and its officials, the problems they encountered, the role of the military and Christian humanitarians in implementing the “Peace Policy,” and its consequences for the Native Americans.
