Course Overview

Unearthed after 500 years: a mass grave with 400 skeletons, and a chilling mystery. These bones didn’t belong to the Aztecs, who ruled Mesoamerica in the 14th – 16th centuries, but their victims. Who were they? Why were they killed? In this fascinating class, you’ll explore the evidence, examine ancient rituals and dive into the brutal world of Mesoamerican conquest and resistance. Uncover the truth behind one of archaeology’s more haunting discoveries and learn how it reshapes our understanding of the Aztecs and the era of Spanish conquest. Mr. Cervantes will show a short film that traces the history of this historical event. He will also discuss which DNA markers are most identified with the victims of this massacre.
