Course OverviewAlthough many consider the protest music of the 1960s and 1970s to be a natural development of the folk-rock era, protest music in the United States can be traced as far back as the Colonial period. This presentation will begin with early 20th century protest music (Fats Waller and Billie Holiday) before moving on to artists of 60s/70s including Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, and Buffy Sainte Marie. Song topics will include the Civil Rights Movement, the War in Vietnam, and Women’s Liberation. Lyric sheets will be provided.
