Course Overview

Throughout the world and in the western democracies like the US, we have seen the rise of authoritarian, nationalist, neo-Nazi and so-called “populist” movements and regimes. Fascism is defined as "political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition." It occurs when the institutions and culture of a democracy lose their vitality, thus allowing a lawless and charismatic leader to capture the powers of the state using untruth, sowing division, encouraging cruelty and violence and scapegoating minorities and the opposition. The United States may be facing one of the most dangerous moments in its history. How did we get to this point and what must be done to restore the vitality of our democracy to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity?”
